My suggestion is that when selecting connected records via a dropdown, the already chosen connected record should be removed from the list of dropdown options.
For example, see below: the “2023-2024” academic year is already selected as a connection. I can open the drop down to add additional connections, however the “2023-2024” record shows up in this list. If I click this record, it actually removes the “2023-2024” record from being currently selected.
